What Is The Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Quilt?
The quilt was designed by Willyne Hammerstein of the Netherlands and is part of a collection of quilts known as the ‘Millefiori Series’. The Ballet Quilt was designed in tandem with Kaffe Fassett using his fabrics for the cover of the Millefiori Quilts 2 book. The entire Millefiori series consists of 3 books (September 2011, October 2014, and September 2017) and totals 53 unique patterns. Each quilt is known for its intricate and complex designs that allow for a variety of color and quilt fabric combinations. If you are looking for additional images and sample blocks, we always suggest Pinterest.
The Ballet Quilt, Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Quilt, or Ballet Millefiori Quilt.
Browsing the internet, you’ll find that the quilt has a variety of names that are all the same quilt! And this doesn’t include the French terminology either! The correct name in the Millefiori Quilts 2 book is “Ballet With Kaffe Fassett”.
Where Do You Find The Quilt Pattern?
The quilt pattern is found on page 84 of the Millefiori Quilts 2 Book (which is shown at the top of this article). The book includes directions on how to sew each rosette, the total number of pieces, how to finish the quilt, and color choices. The quilt consists of 4 distinct shapes (which are shown below with dimensions) that are a diamond, parallelogram, small kite, and large kite. Of these four shapes, there are a total of 3,580 paper pieces that complete the quilt! The quilt is the featured quilt on the cover.
Why Are There So Many Pieces And What Are They Used For? The Millefiori Quilt Series was designed to be either English Paper Pieced or Hand Pieced. Both of these methods are hand sewing methods – even though there is no reason why you couldn’t machine quilt the entire project! Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About The Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Quilt
How Hard Is It To Get Started and What Supplies Do I Need?
Getting started is much easier than it looks! If you are English Paper Piecing, the core supplies of The Pattern Book (for the pattern), acrylic templates (to help with fussy cutting), paper pieces (to help with stablization), fabric (which is up to you!), and various accessories such as Glue Pens. We’ll go through each of these in more detail below. Make sure you view the tutorials as well!
Millefiori Quilts 2 Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Pattern Book
As previously mentioned, at TheDIYAddict, we sell the Millefiori Quilts 2 book. You’ll need this book to view the pattern and find row by row instructions on how to complete each aspect of the quilt. You can attempt to find directions on the internet – but we aren’t aware of any. It’s also excellent to support the author Willyne Hammerstein and her work! You can purchase the book at the bottom of this article by adding it to your cart.
Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Acrylic Templates and Why You Need Them
Seeing how the Ballet quilt is a hand-sewn quilt, acrylic templates are used to help with fussy cutting and precision. At TheDIYAddict we only sell acrylic templates that are completely clear in order to help you see the fabric! Other websites might sell colored acrylic templates – but it’s really hard to see the fabric You can view photos of our acrylic templates towards the bottom of this article.
What Is The Difference Between 3/8 and 1/4″ Seam Allowances and Which Should I Choose? There is no difference between the acrylic templates not including the seam allowance. We wish we could be more precise on which size to choose, but it mostly has to do with personal preference. If you are new to English Paper Piecing, we’d recommend the 3/8″ seam allowance as it’s more forgiving.
Ballet With Kaffe Fassett Paper Pieces and Why You Need Them
This goes back to hand sewing mostly, but the paper pieces are used for precision and to help assemble the individual rosettes more accurately. Due to the fact that most of the rosettes are individual sizes and located in different areas of a final quilt, having a way to precisely piece together your final quilt is a must. Our paper pieces are made using a cardstock paper, that is white. We’ve found that cardstock paper is easier to glue baste than other paper styles.
Original Verse Oversized Pattern and Supplies
When it comes to supplies, specifically acrylic template and paper pieces, you’ll often find varying sizes. The millefiori quilt original size templates (for all of the quilts) are smaller than usual, which can make them hard to handle. At TheDIYAddict, we offer the original size which is the same supplies in the book as well as an oversized set which is 1.5x times larger. The oversized supplies also make the quilt 1.5x larger as well.
How Much Fabric Do You Need?
Choosing fabric can be a difficult proposition. This is a very hard question to answer, but we always suggest you purchase or allocate enough fabric for 1 to 3 rosettes. You should attempt to pick between 5 and 10 fabric designs and around one fat quarter of each. Once you have completed your first 3 rosettes, you’ll have a much better idea of the fabric selection and lengths you’ll need. For some quilters, it might only take 10 yards of fabric, while others it might take up to 20 total yards. The difference comes from if you are fussy cutting the fabric or not. If you are fussy cutting and depending on the fabric (We love Alison Glass and Tula Pink!), it could take up to the 20 yards mentioned above.
Which Thread To Use?
This is another really hard question to answer. At TheDIYAddict our favorite thread if Bottom Line from Superior Threads which is thin. Some quilters like Gutterman’s 100% cotton thread. Another favorite is Aurifil’s 28 weight thread. We recently did a survey and received over 47 different answers when it came to quilters individual preference for their favorite thread.
Before we go any further, we’d like to present product photos and a location to purchase your acrylic templates, paper pieces, and the book within the page so you don’t have to leave it! We’ll also go into more details about potential accessories, fabric choices, and provide tutorials if you keep reading.
