Hey Karen!!! Thank you SO….much for the video series!!! I have poured over your web site when I first discovered what a La Pass even was!! I do have all my papers, acrylic templates, and the book! I just finished the last of my Christmas gift quilts and they are at the longarmer’s!!! So….I am dying to start my La Pass! Just to hear you speak this info has helped!! I am going to attempt to shop for fabrics from my massive stash (that includes fabric I purchased recently just for the La Pass)! I will be at the Quilt Festival on Friday! I live just 30-45 minutes away – lucky me!!! Hope to run into you and can’t wait to see your La Pass in person!!!

Cathy that’s exciting news I can’t wait to see what you do and I’m here if you have any questions. I’m getting to Houston late Friday night. I am doing a live stream at noon Saturday will you be there in front of the quilts? Thanks for the kind words ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for this getting started post. I started out without a plan and have just used fabrics I had on hand in order to try it out. I’ve now made 5 rosettes (just out to the ten stars) all in different colors and patterns. Maybe I’ll just wait and watch more the of series and come up with a plan. I love all your samples!

Sharon this is good news. Starting is the hardest part. You did exactly what I think folks should do. Just make a few small rosettes and stop at the stars. I think I’ve made 15 smalls now for my second la pass. I have one I’ve weeded out but the others are going to work. I have found that repeating fabrics or the same colors helps to tie in rosettes together. Thanks for watching ๐Ÿ™‚

I really loved your video. I’m stuck….you choose 4 colors you loved. You didn’t show how those four colors were incorporated in your rosettes. I saw all kinds of colors. Do you buy all shades of those 4 colors? You can tell, I’m really “on the fence”! I’m headed to the Houston Quilt Festival on Friday and was hoping to find some fabrics. What about using Batiks and not have to worry about fussy cutting. Just a thought. When is your next video? I want to make sure I see them all. This quilt top is something really, out of my box. I want it bright and colorful.

Raven you are too right. My finished quilt is on display at Houston Quilt Festival take a look it’s the one with the piano border. You can go a blog post that reads “finished quilt” to see it as well. The la pass I’m working on behind me in the video is my second. Actually I’ve used the same color inspiration card but I added teal so I have five colors I work with. Yes I did use all shades of those 4 (now 5) colors. Some people have used batiks and I think it works. You don’t have to fussy cut anything. But I would say in that case just make sure your colors are not the same value. You’ll need contrast. Look at Kamie Murdock’s la pass in the show. She used colorful bright and it’s one of my favorites. She did fussy cut a fair amount but you wouldn’t have to. My next video talks about value as well and it will be out on Wednesday. Everyday for as long as I have something useful to say I’ll be posting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really want to help any way I can. This is such a fun quilt and I am so happy I finished mine. No regrets….

Raven look at this post and find my stack of fabrics. This was what I started with but trust me it grew! http://thediyaddict.com/la-passacaglia/choosing-fabrics

I really appreciate your response. I guess I’ll wait for your next video. I think color value is one of my big issues. I say I’m “color challenged”. I can’t get colors to go together. I always buy kits because of this. Wish the La Pass came in a kit. Trying to figure out colors really takes away the joy of just sitting down and piecing. I saw your color swatch and for the life of me, I don’t know how you got the color purple out of your 4 color swatch. Your swatch is what I’d call “dull colors” yet your fabric choice is bright and beautiful. That is what I want. Maybe I can find someone to pick out a starter pack of fabrics and I can go from there, just need that push to get me going. Ugh, one frustrated individual who wants so desperately to make this quilt top. I’m obsessed with this quilt, but slowly being discouraged.

Raven I made a video about color because you are not the only one who has color questions. I’ll but it up on the blog for Thursday! I hope it helps ๐Ÿ™‚ Color can be tricky. I have an art degree so I have been dealing with color for a long time. Be patient….

Thank you, thank you!! This does help a ton. I think that the fabric selection part is somewhat overwhelming, and I do like the idea of choosing a limited palette and sticking to it. I also don’t do well with super duper scrappy, but am not sure I want to fussy cut each piece. Have my templates, but need my papers, and have a few fabrics to get started. Can’t wait to continue following along with the web series! ???

What a great video – well done! I’ve been lurking on the Facebook group for a few years. I have the book, papers and templates, but I was waiting to finish a different project off. I’m a little worried that starting this will derail others, but this feels like the right time to start. Thanks for sharing this info. I’ll be following along.

Well, I sorta got it. I’m going to watch it again later tonight. I can resolve this very easily…….I’ll just take up residence near you for a month! Look forward to meeting you in Houston. Hope we can hook up for a bit, I could use help in picking some fabrics.
