When I first started with the La Passacaglia Quilt, I ran into a few issues, especially with marking the paper pieces. I sure spent a lot of time re-doing my quilt. In this video and written tutorial, I'll discuss several tips and tricks as well as a method I use for marking my paper pieces.

Don't let this happen to you!
I fussy cut most of my pentagons for the La Passacaglia Quilt and I struggle with keeping them in the right order and direction. After too many mistakes I now mark the back of my pieces. You can use a pencil but I use a pen. This makes it so easy to zip right through that pentagon ring. I get into a stitching groove and don't like to stop and put down my work to find the direction of the next pentagon. Some of my mistakes have been even after I took the time to look for the next pentagon shape and still got it wrong when I stitched it in. :(
In this example the unicorns were going every which way so the bottom edge was particularly hard to find.

Prepare the pentagons, cut the shapes and baste.

Layout the order you want to use.

Flip over the pieces EXACTLY in that order carefully keeping the bottom edge in the same spot. I flip sideways.

Start anywhere and mark the papers with numbers 1 to 10. I mark close to the bottom edge just above the folded fabric. Make sure not to confuse the 6 and 9 by using an underline or something to distinguished them.

Then I stack them in order 1 to 10 and you are ready to stitch.
Always keep the numbered end at the bottom (in this case next to the skinny diamonds)

This systems works with all the pentagon rings.
Notice my stitches and how invisible they are. I'm using the "Flat Back Stitch" found HERE:
Good luck and happy stitching :)
