Sewing Those Funny Filler Pieces and Spaces for the La Passacaglia Quilt

Sewing the La Passacaglia Quilt includes a few challenges that most quilts do not include. I don't know if you have reached rosette #5, #8 and #10, but when you do, you'll see there are some filler pieces. They are in fact, just the pentagon shapes. However, they are in awkward places that aren't consistent with the pattern. I do understand that they are needed to make everything fit together. Please know that I think Willyne Hammerstein is an absolute genius! This is in no way a complaint but I had to do something with those fillers. I am such a visual person and I couldn't take my eyes away from those areas. When I put in the filler piece it never looked right to me. Here are three different ways you can change those filler pieces. Three Methods for Sewing the Missing Filler Pieces

First Method:

Cut up a pentagon shape to replicate the matching pattern next to that shape like the photo below. [caption id="attachment_7524" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Pentagon Breakdown for English Paper Piecing La Passacaglia Quilt La Passacaglia Pentagon Breakdown[/caption]   This is actually the diamond and one star triangle shape used in the regular pattern with an extra triangle piece cut. Together they form the pentagon shape. You make your fabric pieces just like you would with this quilt. Stitch together as well in the same manner. Keep in mind that you need to make a mirror image of one piece. [caption id="attachment_7525" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Filler Pieces in the Wrong Location on a La Passacaglia Rosette Filler Pieces in the Wrong Location[/caption] I posted my new filler fix on Instagram and Isabele Denham (also in the Facebook group) told me she does them a little different. So I came up with this other way which I think is better.

Second Method:

[caption id="attachment_7526" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Cutting a Pentagon English Paper Piecing La Passacaglia Rosette Cutting a Pentagon La Passacaglia Rosette[/caption] With this method you use one diamond shape and two star points. Then you cut the corner off one of the small pentagons corner to corner. Now that little piece is tiny but it still works just fine. [caption id="attachment_7527" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Splitting a Pentagon Into Multiple Pieces La Passacaglia Splitting a Pentagon Into Multiple Pieces[/caption] Once again, you make your fabric pieces just like you would with this quilt. Stitch together as well in the same manner. Keep in mind that you need to make a mirror image of one piece. Third Method:

This third option is probably the easiest because you don't need to cut or make any new special shapes. Isabella Denham my lovely Facebook friend showed me how to do this. (Thanks Isabella) [caption id="attachment_7536" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Example of a Missing Pentagon Within One of Your Rosettes La Passacaglia Quilt Example of a Missing Pentagon Within One of Your Rosettes[/caption] Essentially, you make one star and a diamond on each side to fill the two pentagon shapes. The only tricky part here is that you have to remember to leave out the one star point. On both sides. Which one do you like? Hope you find this helpful!
