Pollinate EPP Quilt: The Complete Guide

In this comprehensive beginner’s guide to the Pollinate Quilt, you’ll find video tutorials, supply recommendations, information on English Paper Piecing (EPP), and information regarding quilt kits!

What is the Pollinate Quilt?

The Pollinate Quilt is an English Paper Pieced pattern designed by Kitty Wilkin of Night Quilter. It is known for its rosette-based design and signature bees, which while looking complex is pieced together simply in subsections, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced EPPers alike. The versatility of this pattern is like no other, with many varying aesthetics resulting from different fabric choices and placement. You can view a sampling by scrolling through the posts on Instagram.

This complete guide is designed to be a single, complete resource to everything and anything Pollinate. We plan to update this webpage often with new tutorial videos and resources, so be sure to check back often for updates. If you have any questions that have not been answered in the resources provided here, please email Kitty at thenightquilter@gmail.com.

Pollinate Community

There is already a fabulous community of stitchers sewing Pollinate quilts, so feel free to join us in the Pollinate EPP Garden Party group on Facebook where quilters share their progress, ask and answer questions, and generally support and encourage each other!  Or you can browse the #pollinatequilt hashtag on Instagram. to see what everyone is up to.  Be inspired by the many different color and pattern designs that can be created through the Pollinate pattern!

Why People Love the Pollinate Quilt and English Paper Piecing

The Pollinate quilt is being stitched by quilters across the world, and the response is unanimous—it’s one of the most exciting and fun EPP patterns designed! Even quilters who had never tried hand stitching or English Paper Piecing before gave it a try and were immediately hooked! The versatility of designs that can be created from this one pattern is endless, and we’re sure you will fall in love, too.  While the initial price point of EPP patterns is higher than traditionally pieced patterns (approx $90 for Pollinate), you don’t need a sewing machine to sew it! Plus, you can use the acrylic templates and papers again and again, creating many quilts, pillows, and cushions from the same pattern. English paper piecing is addictive, both for its meditative quality and for its portability. You can take your EPP stitching with you anywhere—to the beach, to the playground while your kids play, on a mountaintop after your favorite hike, to the couch during your favorite movie, or even in the car (while riding in the passenger seat!). Pick up your stitching and take some deep breathes, soothe your soul and create beauty all at once.

Pollinate EPP – Tutorials and Resources

Karen at TheDIYAddict has a fabulous library of general English Paper Piecing tutorial videos, including how to glue baste, how to keep your thread from breaking, and tips on how to use a variety of stitches (which can be viewed HERE).

Once you have a handle on EPP, here are some video tutorials to get you started with your Pollinate Quilt.  This library of resources will grow, so be sure to check back often!

Basting Tips for Pollinate EPP:

I also have a series of videos about color planning for your Pollinate quilt, if you plan to create a quilt like mine (rainbow spectrum!). I included lots of planning tools that come with your Pollinate Pattern Guide, so the first video introduces all of the included tools as well as other tools you may want to use. Because I could talk for hours about color planning, I broke the video into three parts. I suggest beginning with the first and watching them in order.

Color Planning for Pollinate EPP, Part 2: Building out the Rainbow

Color Planning for Pollinate EPP, Part 3: Contrast and Negative Space

The Bee section of the quilt is actually the filler between rosettes, so there are not acrylic templates for a few of the pieces. Here’s a video all about piecing the Bee portion of the Pollinate quilt, including how to cut fabric without an acrylic template.

Piecing the Bee and Cutting Fabric without an Acrylic Template

Finally, I LOVE using fussy cutting in my quilting, and Pollinate is a perfect pattern for fussy cutting! Fussy cutting is the process of selectively cutting specific motifs from a fabric print. When those meticulously cut pieces are joined in a circular way (as in the 5-pointed star or piehex in the Pollinate pattern), amazingly unique and gorgeous secondary designs are created. There are many videos to come in this section, so watch this space!
